Custom Shower And Tub Surroundings

Choose CC Carpet for your shower remodel

There are many factors to consider when choosing shower tile. The design of the shower dictates the type of tile to be used. A shower with a curved shower bench needs a small tile. The tile must be suitable for both floor and wall.

Mosaic shower tiles are the most widely chosen for a continuous, clean look that conforms to the pitch of the floor in a shower. Smaller bathroom tiles are perfect for covering a sloping floor. There are enough grout lines to provide traction against slipping.

The choice of tile has to be wet location approved. Ninety-five percent of the tile backside must be in contact with the tile concrete, referred to as the thin set. Frequently, thin set installation involves a notched trowel. Tiles such as mosaic cannot reach 95 percent coverage with trowel thinset installation.

Large format tile is ideal for aging in place and barrier-free design. Search for a tile with an A or B slip resistance to address the safety issue of large format tile. That tile is safer than one with a C rating.

Things to remember when choosing shower tile

Small tiles work best on curves. Have the tiles on site before designing the bench. The installer can work out the natural arcs and the angle of the curves.

Small tiles feel nice to sit on. A curved edged feels great on the legs. A shower bench without an eased edge is hard on the backs of the legs. Plan to use a tile that offers a radius of bullnose edge for the shower bench.

Be careful in the selection of mosaic tile. You want mosaic tiles that provide a minimum of 95 percent contact from the backer board to the tile. The contact is necessary for the floor to the wall. Don't trust the glue on the tile sheet.

Large clear glass is not as easy to work with as small colored glass. Moisture can become trapped behind transparent glass tiles and affect the appearance after only a few uses.
